Project Summary
Overview
With millions of devices, factory floor technicians struggle to identify device or machine issues from network failures.
Responsibilities
My responsibilities included working with multiple teams to understand the baseline and needs of customers to make sure we can make it easier to identify problems within the factory floor.
Impact
With faster diagnostics and updated visuals, our users were able to diagnose issues faster.
The Problem
Factories have machines - sometimes up to the thousands. Each machine could be hard wired to a network, or wirelessly connected to keep in sync with the factory floor. When a machine goes down, it can cost up to $50k per minute if a machine isnt stopped.
Research
Before we begin redesigning, we have to evaluate the current platform. We sent a team of researchers over to bush brothers to understand the issues that they run into so we can create a better prototype for testing. The photos below are the actual bush brothers employees we interviewed on site.
Redesign
Evaluating what we have to redesign, below is an image of the previous product that needed a lot of updating. The graph and bar charts took up a lot of space, and needed users to scroll down to see the whole data set.
Lots of unused space in charts, and the page can use a bit more love to modernize the visuals.
Ideating the changes
After researching and talking to users, we come up with a solution to help factory floor workers move faster. They are not devs, and do not how to code, nor do they know how to effectively read code, so we decided to increase visuals to help factory floor workers diagnose issues faster.
Final Design
After testing and receiving feedback, we were able to redesign a more scaleable menu, alongside a better generated visual for the factory floor workers to diagnose issues faster. Providing a device view also helps users diagnose where there are issues within the ports of a gateway, switch, or device.
Remove Command Line Inputs
Factory floor workers don't really know how to read code. I proposed to remove the command line code, and make a visual instead to show the connection status.
